Updating The Decor In Your Preteen’s Bedroom
June 5th, 2010 Posted in Kitchen Remodeling IdeasAs you kids grow from toddlers to school age and into the preteen years, they were probably proud of their cartoon wallpaper border. Then it happens. Tastes change, old favorites become very unpopular and the decor in their bedroom is nothing close to what they would be proud of. Now is the time for a decorating update. Before you embark on this adventure, there are some things you should expect.
Be prepared to listen to the opinions of your preteen. They might be passionate about certain things and you need to decide how important different aspects are to you. Maybe the wall color or the furniture isn’t worth fighting about. Then again, maybe it is. Figure out all of that before the discussions come up and be ready to compromise.
Don’t be surprised if your preteen asks for a bright, even shocking color. Or they may want furniture that you wouldn’t even sit on. You’ll definitely need to design some space for flat screen televisions, docking stations and laptops, essential items for every preteen.
For extra storage space, look at buying innovative furniture like a twin loft bed. With plenty of room for sleeping, a loft bed also leaves open floor space. Solid wood or metal painted in a neutral color is the best choice. Invest in furniture that has sturdy construction to ensure that it lasts.
Now is the time to pack up the blankets covered in their favorite super hero. Shop together for a more grown up bedding collection. Make sure you will both be happy with the choice and leave behind any patterns or styles that will be out of style or dated by next year.
Take a look at the artwork in their bedroom. You could change it to reflect their older fancies, but be aware that whoever is hot today will be stone cold by tomorrow. Instead of prints or frames, install one large cork board and give them free reign to pin up their favorites. That way when the mood changes the posters can be easily taken down to make room for the next new thing.
Your preteen likely has their own computer and could use private space for homework and the like. Choose bedroom furniture that will deliver that. Daybeds are a good option, doubling as both a sleeping spot and a couch. But they don’t come with a flat work surface. Loft beds with desk are the best choice, offering the convenience of their own desk but not crowding the room.
Design for simple decorating and solid, easy to care for furniture. Let them do the choosing to help them feel a part of the process. Enjoy the chance to explore what your child likes and dislikes. Then go away and give them their space, they’re getting a text and need to do their homework.
