Create Space In Your Small Kitchen
May 6th, 2008 Posted in Small Kitchen RemodelingMany people get frustrated by the lack of work and storage space available in their small kitchens. This is a problem that is common to many of us. The good news is that there is something that can be done. With a well thought out small kitchen design you can maximize the space that you already have and create space that you never knew existed!
Maximizing Space
The most important thing to do when remodeling your kitchen is to make the most of the space that is available to you. The first step is to ensure that you have enough storage space for all your kitchen necessities.
Storage space is of utmost importance. The last thing that you want is a cluttered kitchen, with groceries and kitchen utensils piled up all over the place. A disorderly kitchen can create a stifling and unbearable effect. To avoid this you need to maximize your kitchen’s storage space.
Creating More Room
Luckily, there are various remodeling methods that can be used to create more space in your kitchen. A great example is floor to ceiling shelves or cupboards. This will provide you with a lot of additional space in your small kitchen. This will, of course, require you to use a small foot stool or ladder to reach the upper shelves but it is well worth it. Kitchen items that are used infrequently or that usually get in the way can be stored in the top shelves, while the daily necessities can be stored at eye level or below the work surfaces. Rotating cupboards or shelves are another popular idea that you can use. These are used to best effect under the kitchen counters. Rotating cupboards can provide a lot of much needed space in a small kitchen.
Once you have maximized your storage space, you will also need to create more space for yourself in your kitchen. This can be done by fitting deeper counter tops which provide you with more work space. Another idea is to remove the center island in your kitchen (if you have one). This will open your kitchen up a lot and give you much more room to move around. Just remember, while implementing these methods, it is important not to cut down on your storage space.
Making More Space
Small details can have a big effect on the overall look and feel of your kitchen. Examples of this include the size of your kitchen carpet and the placement of your lighting. A smaller kitchen carpet can make the general area appear larger, while smaller light fittings that are installed close to the ceiling can make your kitchen feel more open and inviting.
Be sure to buy appropriate furniture for your remodeled kitchen. Instead of buying a kitchen table, rather install a kitchen counter with stools or high chairs that can be moved under the kitchen counter when they are not being used. This can be a huge space saver!
At first, a small kitchen remodeling job may seem like a big headache but, with the right attitude and some inventive ideas, it is possible to create an open, inviting, comfortable kitchen!
