Im Nationalsozialismus erreichte diese Ablehnung einen Scheitelpunkt und die Moderne wurde nun als die bekannte „Entartete Kunst“ bezeichnet, es folgten Berufsverbote und herabwürdigende Darbietungen, und die Sparten der Kunst des frühen zwangsigsten Jhds. wurden ab November im Jahre 1936 in deutschen Kunsthäusern aufgelöst.

Sammelbegriffe wie die „Kunst der Gegenwart“ oder „Zeitgenössische Kunst“ definieren die gegenwärtige Kunst nur allgemein. Für die seit Beginn der Postmoderne erwachsende Kunst ist der Begriff „Künstlerische Avantgarde“ überholt. Aus diesem Umstand heraus dient „Zeitgenössische Kunst“ als Paraphrase für die künstlerischen Werke, die dazu beisteuern, einen Inhalt so wahrnehmbar in der Gegenwart zu machen, so dass sie, kulturwissenschaftlich betrachtet, wichtig in die Zukunft wirken.
