First and most obviously, it is an extra surface where you can extend your culinary work, using it for chopping mixing, and even just spreading out the various utensils you will use in the course of food preparation.
However perhaps even more important, kitchen tables are a place for people to gather. This piece can act as a sort of beacon, a central spot where people can come and comfortably enjoy the warm atmosphere of the kitchen. It’s a social piece that makes the entire space more inviting and friendly.
The size, shape, and nature of any table that you bring into the kitchen will be determined by the space available in the room. If your kitchen is expansive, you will of course have a lot more options. However if room is tight, you will have to choose a table that fits into the extra space available.
In general a round table will take up less space than a square one. The thing about round tables is that they don't have corners which just out into the space of the kitchen. However, if you have a free ninety degree corner in the kitchen, then a square table may be more appropriate, as it will be able to jut up perfectly into that corner.
One thing you have to be careful of is to not use a table which takes up too much floor space. You can't have clutter choking the walkways in this space, you have to maintain a sense of flow, that will let the chef move swiftly from one station to the next.
If space is limited, you might want to go with a small bistro table, or even a wall counter, rather than a full out table. These are smaller pieces that can be pushed to the side, leaving plenty of room to work throughout the space.
In a pinch, you always have the option of going with a temporary table. Folding tables, or even pieces with a fold out leaf, allow you to suit the room to the occasion, taking up as much space as you want, and then folding them away when its time to turn your kitchen back into a work space.
One of the great things about kitchen tables is that they are multi functional, not only do they give you more room to work, but they also are a natural gathering spot, making the kitchen instantly more sociable. However you have to be sure to match the size and shape of the table to the room that you have available.
